While the growth opportunity for all types of cannabis products is vast, challenges exist for those looking to break into the industry. Strict zoning laws and regulations across the country for both the growing and distribution of cannabis has caused delays in the opening of shops and disrupted sales expansion. Cannabis companies face many label and packaging regulations that require proper safety features and warning/ingredient statements. And as with any consumer product, cannabis brands need to set themselves apart in the increasingly crowded field.
The Dion Label Printing team has been working with cannabis brands for many years and we deeply understand the label requirements for companies in this industry. We offer label options that are perfectly suited to cannabis products. Our solutions include extended content labels that can be used for directions, legal warnings, ingredients, additional language, and unique iconography or graphics. We also offer a number of security features: tamper seals, sequential numbering, microtext, 2-sided printing, and holographic features. CHALLENGE EXPLORATION
In the summer of 2020, the Dion team partnered with a growing cannabis brand, Sanctuary Medicinals
Sanctuary Medicinals offers both medicinal and recreational cannabis across multiple locations in Massachusetts and Florida. With their vast array of product offerings including pre-rolls, edibles, extract, tincture, vape, flower, and more, Sanctuary sees cannabis as both a science and an art. Their product is “cultivated with passion,” all of their flower “comes from exceptional genetics,” and their products are “artisanal hand-crafted in-house.”
When we first met with Sanctuary, they were looking for a few specific solutions: they needed extra space on labels for pre-roll containers and they needed a faster label application system to keep up with the rapid growth of their brand. They were searching for a local vendor who could assist with machinery troubleshooting on site when needed.
CUSTOM EXTENDED CONTENT LABELS

And we were able to customize a solution that fit Sanctuary’s size, design, and spatial needs with the highest quality material and printing. We currently print peel back labels for their thin pre-roll containers.
The design of the labels is minimalistic but striking with a color palette primarily of green and black on the lightest of grey backgrounds. The duochromatic design is ideally suited to the small container size of the pre-roll and keeps the label from seeming busy while at the same time drawing the eye to the brand name and social media iconography. Our favorite part of the label is the subtle test tube logo in white that seemingly bubbles from the bottom of the label up. The difference between the light grey of the background and the white of this graphic is very discrete, but it adds a marked flair of style and sophistication to the design.
From a functional perspective, the peel back label enables the front portion to be entirely dedicated to the label design, while the important ingredient, dosage, and warning information can be included on the internal panel without disrupting the clean look and feel of the product. While for many cannabis products including all pertinent regulatory information can be a challenge on the limited space of a label, for packaging as small as Sanctuary’s pre-roll containers, additional space is imperative. A peel back label with a custom adhesive deadener allows for the label to be opened and closed seamlessly with our Read and Reapply construction.
LABEL APPLICATION & EQUIPMENT
But we are more than just a label printer, and we love helping our customers find the machinery to complement our printed labels.
We supplied Sanctuary Medicinals with label application and printing equipment to function with their containers and accommodate for their growing needs. Our team of experts worked closely with Sanctuary; while their initial inquiry was for a semi-automatic label applicator, their special tapered containers and their increasing label volume needs led us to recommend a fully automatic applicator with coordinating printer for lot and variable batch information. And since we supply Sanctuary with the labels that are used with the applicator, we were able to modify the adhesive deadener pattern on those labels so the labels and application equipment work together seamlessly.
FUTURE GROWTH
Even in the brief two years since our partnership began, we have watched Sanctuary Medicinals expand dramatically, adding more products and locations regularly.
We hope to continue to grow with them and supply labels for their recreational lines as well as their medicinal lines and for their many different product options. As more and more cannabis shops open across the state of Massachusetts and the rest of the country, Sanctuary Medicinals has established themselves as a trusted source for quality cannabis products.
